Bill, we went through the same nonsense in Lowell 4 years ago at Cherry Creek Elementary. It really turned out to be a big deal at the time. We had some local TV coverage and somehow I ended up being the head troublemaker and had to go speak at a board meeting. Myself and the other troublemaker parents convinced the board to back off on the schools plan. They wanted to get rid of Halloween and replace it with "Fall Celebration", get rid of Christmas and replace it with "Winter Celebration" and the clincher some how Valentines Day was bad too so we had to have I can't even remember what that new stupid sterile name that was going to be. The parents in Rockford will hopefully get active and nip this thing in the bud before it even gets off the ground. You know when we finally got to the bottom of the situation in Lowell we discovered that none of the parents that had an issue with any particular holiday ever complained. They simply did not send their kid to school that day. Those who did keep their kids home were in an incredibly small percentage of the schools population. Like 4 percent. Anyway what was driving the whole thing was this do-gooder well intentioned mentality group called family links who took it upon themselves to convince the principal that this was a good thing for everyone. Too bad she listened to them because she really ticked off a much larger percent of the population then she had ever imagined.

The Executive Director

Hi, Ed.

Well, that does raise an interesting question: What is the politically correct apellation for St. Valentine's Day?

I commend you for standing up against this nonsense. Indeed, it's pernicious nonsense, because it perversely teaches kids intolerance of differences rather than tolerance.

Besides what a crabby way to suck all the fun out of school for kids.

Gee I wish I could remember what it was about valentines day but for some reason they did not like the passing of cards. Probably some former child(now adult)was always the kid that never got a card and traumatized for life because of it. Forget that they were obese, a jerk or just born ugly. Hey who ever said life was fair. Now they had to ruin it for the rest of the population. To replace the Valentines Cards I swear what they dreamed up was "character cards". Humm, If we started handing out character cards there might someday big a former child(now adult) president who never got one and the trauma leftover from this experience turned him into a lying sex addict. No wait, it wasn't character it was "compassion cards" Yes that was it, I have compassion for you becuse you are are fat, ugly jerk. That certainly will help one's self esteem.

The Executive Director

Hey, Ed ...

Be nice to those fat ugly jerks! I've managed to be all three in my life, sometimes all at once. ;)

Regards, Bill

L.A.W. Highlights

  • Yeah, and Summer is Hotter Than Winter
The Grand Rapids Press ignores science to promote feel-good politics on the environment and becomes the watchdog that doesn't bark.
  • When Will It Stop?
Enough of the repulsive tactic of accusing everyone of bigotry who doesn't kowtow to the racemongers.
  • Thirty-Six Bucks
Balancing the City budget: Maybe it's time for those making a living on the taxpayer's dime to give up a little instead of sticking it to the taxpayer one more time.
  • The Problem With Teachers
Why teachers are the professionals least suited to run a school district -- or even a school.
  • The Pig in the Python
The dirty little secret behind the success and failure of every school reform that the education establishment, the public school bureaucrats, and the teachers unions will never reveal.
  • The Fool's Gold of a College Education
Most kids who get a college degree today have nothing but an expensive credential that lands them a job that any high school graduate could have gotten a generation ago -- WITHOUT the heavy burden of paying back a student loan.
  • The Fixer
A four-part series about the local attorney behind the demise of Autodie, Butterworth Hospital, Amway, and Old Kent. Warning: Strong accusations of corruption, greed, and skullduggery. Not for the feint of heart.
  • Poison
The nasty nature of the 26,000 tons of poison that The Boardwalk's developers dug up and then dumped upon the rest of us.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: The Demise of Quixtar
The re-branding of Amway as Quixtar put lipstick on the pig, but none of the crappy way of doing business changed. Now comes public scrutiny around the world to control its kingpins and clean up the dirty "tools" business.
  • Lost Cause
A story of how River City lost its way to a secure economic future.
  • Living Wage Kills Jobs
City pols support a Marxist policy that, like all Marxist policies, hurt the very people they say it will help.
  • El Dorado, Big Rock Candy Mountain, and the Grand Rapids Public School District
Those of us not in straitjackets are fairly certain that lands of fabulous wealth free for the taking do not exist. No El Dorado, no Big Rock Candy Mountain, no Shangri-la, and no GRPS with money growing on trees.
  • Defenders Who Do Not Defend
Excessive plea-bargaining, lack of preparation, shoddy to non-existent representation, conflicts of interests are rife among lawyers taking public defender cases on the taxpayer dime.
