... According to Judge Enslen $1.6 million.
Yesterday Judge Richard Enslen of the U.S. District Court ordered former Metropolitan Health vice president Mary Scott to pay her ex-employer $1.6 million for lying to the court. You may recall that Scott had brought a false claim lawsuit against Metropolitan hospital. She alleged that it had filed false statements with the federal government to obtain fraudulent health care reimbursements from the taxpayers. The hospital settled the suit two years ago by agreeing to return $6.25 million of those reimbursements. Scott then received a bounty of $1.1 million from the federal government.
Now it was Scott's turn to be tagged as a fraud. She filed a wrongful discharge lawsuit in Enslen's court claiming that Metropolitan had fired her for blowing the whistle on the hospital's fraud. However, the court ruled that the basis of her lawsuit were false affidavits. Furthermore, she knowingly concealed evidence detrimental to her wrongful discharge claim. So Judge Enslen socked her with $1.6 million in sanctions payable to Metropolitan to cover its attorney fees in defense against her fraudulent lawsuit.
The Local Area Watch is pleased to see at least one judge in the Western Michigan district is willing to penalize fraudsters who pollute the judicial process with their lies.
Metropolitan Hospital is famous for falsifying Employee records. I have witnesses of how Metro falsifies employee records and not only do they falsify employee records they falsify medical records as well. My witnesses have their real records and the doctored Metro records so you can compare for yourself. What Metro didn't count on is employees that know how to cover their behind. Bottomline Mary Scott is not lying and the judge should not have taken Metro's word that her records were falsified. All too often Insititutions are believed over people. Mary Scott served her purpose for the US Government and it was in Metro's best interest to settle with the Government rather than have a judgement against them. Metro wants redemption because Mary Scott has embarassed them. Remember, without Ms. Scott the Government would have had nothing to collect from Metro and now that the Government is done with her she's being thrown to the wolves. Notice how many jobs were lost after Metro settled? Mike Faas promised his employees the settlement would not effect them. Guess what? It did effect them but some of them were one step ahead and obtained their authentic records.

Let me get this right. A hospital is stealing millions of dollars from the taxpayers. This hospital is caught stealing millions of dollars from the taxpayers. Then a judge gives the criminal corporation $1.6 million dollars because the whistleblower allegedly produced false affidavits & false testimony???!!!??? I'd sure like to see the evidence involved, because it sounds like a bunch of crap. I'm sure that the local rednecks here in Michigan will buy anything that is sold to them. You hillbillies are ruining what is left of Western Michigan. What a joke.

Hi, Annette (a.k.a. Guess What).
I find it hard to believe that Metro Hospital settled with the government for any other reason than Ms. Scott did catch them in a fraud. Nothing I have had to say exonerates Metro and implies it is an upstanding public citizen.
However, Metro abuse of public funds does not excuse Ms. Scott's fraud upon the court. I dealt with too many judges letting people lie in court, because they don't want to bother with getting deep enough into the facts to address the problem. Unrestrained perjury and fraud will destroy our justice system, and it's the job of judges to fix it. The sanction against Scott to pay the legal fees for the defense against her fraudulent lawsuit is a welcome development.

Mr. Hite,
As one of the "hillbillies" born and raised in this town, I'm ignorant of the high moral principle that excuses the commission of a fraud against a fraudster. Ms. Scott's successful false claim suit against Metro Hospital did not give her license to submit false affidavits to the court and fraudulently conceal information from it.
The good we do does not give us a "get out of jail free" card when we do wrong.
However, if you believe that Metro Hospital framed Ms. Scott and so the court's sanctions against her have no merit, the Local Area Watch would be very interested in the factual basis for that belief. Let us know. It is a story we will investigate.

Welcome to the corruption you write about. Who supplied the evidence against Mary Scott? It sounds like the judge was duped.
